It’s Sunday in Bonaire, and the island moved at a slower pace today—just like us. We slept in a bit, then D &amp; B hit the gym for a quick workout.Next stop: breakfast at <a data-mce-href="https://www.bagelandbloom.com/" href="https://www.bagelandbloom.com/">Bagel and Bloom</a>, a charming little spot we’d tried (unsuccessfully) to visit twice before. Both prior attempts were too close to their 4 p.m. closing time and, by then, they were already shut down. This time, we made it during traditional breakfast hours, and it was bustling. I ordered a loaded breakfast sandwich—and I’m so glad I did. This open-air restaurant had a relaxed, welcoming vibe, and we were lucky enough to catch some live music while we ate. With more than 30,000 goats roaming free, it’s no surprise that this stew is iconic. Getting gas here took a bit of effort. There are only four stations on the island, and only one was open when we needed it. (Travel tip: if you’re flying out on a Monday, get gas earlier in the day on Sunday to avoid last-minute stress!) After waiting in line for about 20 minutes, we finally fueled up and headed home.And now, we’re packing our bags and preparing for tomorrow’s departure. 😞 It’s hard to believe this trip is already coming to a close. Bonaire Day 7: Sunday Vibes, Stew & Surprises

Day 6? Already? Time is a strange thing on vacation—somehow both leisurely and fast-moving. We started our day slowly. The yellow also nods to the Kibrahacha tree, which blooms briefly only after perfect conditions—a moment considered lucky by Bonaireans. The black compass speaks to Bonaire’s history as a seafaring island, with arrows symbolizing equality in all directions. Finally, the red six-pointed star honors the island’s original six villages and the sacrifices of the enslaved people who built its foundations.After our slow morning, we geared up for a sunset tour aboard the <a data-mce-href="https://www.aquaspacebonaire.nl/" href="https://www.aquaspacebonaire.nl/">Aquaspace</a>, a very cool and very unusual sailboat. Designed in the late 70s by French architect Jacques Rougerie—who worked with Jacques Cousteau, no less—this vessel has a rich history and an underwater observation area that makes you feel like you’re sailing through an aquarium. Even so, a quick trip to the boat’s super-heated loo had me questioning my choices. Also, I tragically failed in the photo department—either forgetting to take them altogether or having my phone locked up “in the brig” (read: safely stored). Sadly, the photos turned out blurry because I was slightly distracted by a herd of donkeys right next to our car. They were skittish. So was I. All in all, it was a great tour… but a long one. Incredible. This was my first burger of the trip, and if it’s any indication, D might be onto something with his ongoing burger tour of Bonaire. Bonaire Day 5: Desert Vibes, Family Dynamics & Yet Another Amazing Burger

Today is Ascension Day, which means many businesses in Bonaire are closed or on island time—slower, sleepier, and with reduced hours. So we kicked things off with our daily pilgrimage to the grocery store early in the day, just in case things shut down later. <a data-mce-href="https://www.facebook.com/vdtsbonaire/?locale=nl_NL" href="https://www.facebook.com/vdtsbonaire/?locale=nl_NL">Van den Tweel</a> is the island’s high-end grocery option, so I braced myself for sticker shock… but it never came. Honestly, with how expensive groceries are in the States these days, Bonaire’s prices didn’t feel outrageous at all. Choose your adventure.Once we had groceries in hand, we popped over to the dive shop conveniently located next to our apartment to rent snorkels and masks. We came to Bonaire because of its legendary off-shore snorkeling, but even with high expectations, we were blown away. As soon as we entered the water, we were surrounded by a riot of fish—so many colors, shapes, and species I couldn’t begin to name them all.The bad news? Our GoPro decided to give up the ghost after about five minutes. Sunscreen fail.</li><li>And, in a truly special moment of poor planning, we forgot to bring any water with us to Tori’s Reef. So while the snorkeling was incredible, we could only stay as long as we could tolerate the brining process.</li></ul>After snorkeling, we returned to the apartment and collapsed into the kind of naps that feel like time travel. I briefly surfaced before promptly crashing again. Apparently, we snorkeled like champions and napped like professionals.Eventually, D woke me for dinner, and I’m so glad he did. We finally made it to <a data-mce-href="https://www.facebook.com/iriebonaire/" href="https://www.facebook.com/iriebonaire/">IRIE Jamaican Cuisine</a>, which had been on our list. We got there just before they opened, so we wandered over to the nearby <a data-mce-href="https://diocesewillemstad.com/" href="https://diocesewillemstad.com/">San Bernardo Catholic Church</a>, a beautiful building that’s been catching my eye all week. Everything came with rice and beans, salad, fried plantains, and fritters. I also treated myself to a homemade ginger beer. Let me just say: I could eat fried plantains and fritters every day for the rest of my life.
