You’re on vacation—it should feel like it.Anyway, back to the day.After the tour, we went straight to dinner at <a data-mce-href="https://www.facebook.com/FoxyFlamingo" href="https://www.facebook.com/FoxyFlamingo">Foxy Flamingo</a>, where the outdoor tables were cute and quirky—and, as D put it, "miserably uncomfortable." Incredible. This was my first burger of the trip, and if it’s any indication, D might be onto something with his ongoing burger tour of Bonaire. Bonaire Day 5: Desert Vibes, Family Dynamics & Yet Another Amazing Burger

Today is Ascension Day, which means many businesses in Bonaire are closed or on island time—slower, sleepier, and with reduced hours. So we kicked things off with our daily pilgrimage to the grocery store early in the day, just in case things shut down later. <a data-mce-href="https://www.facebook.com/vdtsbonaire/?locale=nl_NL" href="https://www.facebook.com/vdtsbonaire/?locale=nl_NL">Van den Tweel</a> is the island’s high-end grocery option, so I braced myself for sticker shock… but it never came. Honestly, with how expensive groceries are in the States these days, Bonaire’s prices didn’t feel outrageous at all. Choose your adventure.Once we had groceries in hand, we popped over to the dive shop conveniently located next to our apartment to rent snorkels and masks. We came to Bonaire because of its legendary off-shore snorkeling, but even with high expectations, we were blown away. As soon as we entered the water, we were surrounded by a riot of fish—so many colors, shapes, and species I couldn’t begin to name them all.The bad news? Our GoPro decided to give up the ghost after about five minutes. Sunscreen fail.</li><li>And, in a truly special moment of poor planning, we forgot to bring any water with us to Tori’s Reef. So while the snorkeling was incredible, we could only stay as long as we could tolerate the brining process.</li></ul>After snorkeling, we returned to the apartment and collapsed into the kind of naps that feel like time travel. I briefly surfaced before promptly crashing again. Apparently, we snorkeled like champions and napped like professionals.Eventually, D woke me for dinner, and I’m so glad he did. We finally made it to <a data-mce-href="https://www.facebook.com/iriebonaire/" href="https://www.facebook.com/iriebonaire/">IRIE Jamaican Cuisine</a>, which had been on our list. We got there just before they opened, so we wandered over to the nearby <a data-mce-href="https://diocesewillemstad.com/" href="https://diocesewillemstad.com/">San Bernardo Catholic Church</a>, a beautiful building that’s been catching my eye all week. Everything came with rice and beans, salad, fried plantains, and fritters. I also treated myself to a homemade ginger beer. Let me just say: I could eat fried plantains and fritters every day for the rest of my life. Bonaire Day 4: A Holiday, a Whole Lot of Fish & an Epic Nap

Paddling through the mangrove tunnels was peaceful and otherworldly, and snorkeling among the roots gave us a glimpse into the vibrant, complex underwater world they support. It was a rough night for everyone. I blogged well into the morning hours (hello, 4 a.m.), and the boys bore the brunt of inadequate AC. D never managed to get his room cool enough, so he woke up hot, sweaty, and unrested a couple hours after I went to bed. Meanwhile, B wasn’t even running his AC—because he couldn’t find the remote. None of us could. It's still missing, and I’m starting to think it’s hiding out with all the other things that go missing on vacation.Fortunately, I was sleeping in the room with two single beds so I wouldn’t wake D during my late-night writing session, and I offered B a bed in my room where the AC was going strong. We’ll definitely be more intentional about our sleeping arrangements tonight—no one gets good rest as they slowly dessicate.Technically, the apartment does have air conditioning, but the messaging is pretty clear that we should try not to use it. And when we do, it’s about as efficient as fanning yourself with a dinner napkin. One other thing I’ve realized after our first night: the bathroom light switches are outside the doors. I have now peed in total darkness three times because I forgot to flip the switch before going in. And let me tell you, growing up with siblings, a setup like this would have been a weapon. The temptation to flip that switch off mid-bathroom visit would’ve been irresistible. So, yes, our honeymoon phase with the apartment may be over—but I’m not asking for a divorce just yet. It’s still a solid space for our needs.I finally rolled out of bed around 10 a.m. and found D napping on the couch. I snapped a photo of the ocean from what was supposed to be B’s room and took some time to rehydrate and strategize the day. The boys ordered burgers, and I went for the “Fight Club” sandwich: ham, cheese, deli chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo. It was tasty but not quite enough to fill me up. I was this close to asking the waitstaff if I could rescue the untouched fries from a neighboring table of divers (seriously, who doesn’t eat their fries?). So when B asked if we could get dessert, I didn’t hesitate. I ordered a slice of passion fruit cheesecake and devoured it immediately.
